U.S. Marine Corps Veteran, (1893-1899) Spanish American War. During the war he was a corporal in the Marine detachment on Commodore George Dewey's flagship of the seven-ship Asiatic Squadron, USFS Olympia, and present at the Battle of Manila Bay.
He detached from Olympia and to the cruiser USS Raleigh in December 1898. Raleigh returned to the United States via the Suez Canal and Gibraltar, reaching New York on April 15, 1899, where she was greeted by officials at the first of Dewey's Asiatic Squadron to return to the U.S.
A native of Ireland, he enlisted in the Marine Corps from California on September 8, 1893 and was honorably discharged on June 7, 1899. Following his discharge, he settled in Philadelphia and married Elizabeth Sullivan. Elizabeth worked as a housekeeper and Richard as a chauffeur. They had a son, James, born in 1919. Elizabeth died two years later in 1921, leaving Richard to raise their son. Richard retired in 1933. He died at Philadelphia in December 1939 at the age of 65, and was survived by his son, James, who later served in the Army during World War II.
