Hayward James Evenrud, 84, of rural Decorah, died Sunday, Feb 27, 2000, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon following a brief illness.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 1, at 1:30 pm at Glenwood Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, with the Rev. Susan Debner officiating.
Casket bearers were Ray Kvame, Roger Espe, Gary Smorstad, Lyle Mahoney, John Ottara, & Dennis Ruen.
Interment was at the Glenwood West Cemetery. The Martin Funeral Home in Waukon handled arrangements.
Hayward was born Jan. 6, 1916, in Glenwood Township of Winneshiek County, rural Decorah, the son of Arthur Bernard & Olga Bergetta (Hill) Evenrud. He was baptised & confirmed at Glenwood Lutheran Church & attended the rural Rocksvold School.
On Oct 5, 1940, he was married to Edith Lorraine Taylor at the Glenwood Lutheran Church. Their children were Gary, Loren, & Nancy.
Hayward lived his entire life on the century family farm. Like many farmers of his day, he spent long hours working with the land & he developed a fondness for raising livestock.
He was a lifelong member of Glenwood Lutheran Church & participated in several early building campaigns, including the staone parish hall addition.
Hayward also was actrive in the men's brotherhood & was a former Church Council member. He always looked forward to the annual lutefisk dinners & other events at the church.
After the death of his wife, Edith, Hayward remained on the family farm & in his retirement he enjoyed many visits from his family & his neighborhood friends.
Farm visitors cherished his wisdom & subtle humor. He always took time to visit over coffee & he thouroughly enjoyed his children, grandchildren, & great-grandchildren. His wise consel & practical view of the world will be missed.
Hayward taught by example that life is precious & that every day is a God-given gift.
Survivors include a son, Loren & Carole Evenrud of Cannon Falls, MN; a daughter, Nancy & Mark Winsholtz of Andover, MN; 6 grandchildren, Kristin (Mikkel) Paulson of Decorah, Sarah (Jack) Kerveshian of Golden Valley, MN, Nelson Evenrud of St. Paul, MN,& Wendy, Becky, & Shannon Winholtz, all of Andover, MN; 2 great-grandchildren, Frederick Paulson of Decorah & Nicolas Kerbeshian of Golden Valley, MN; & a nephew, Dennis Ruen & his daughters Sarah, Landa, Breanna, & Laura, all of Decorah.
Hayward Evenrud was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Edith Lorraine; his infant son, Gary David; his sister, Arla Ruen; his niece, Donna Ruen; & his infant great-grandchild, Luke Kerbeshian.

Hayward & Edith had 3 children together: Gary David (1941-1941), Loren Anthony (1943-), & Nancy Lynn (1954-).
