Oscar Edward Illgen was the son of Edward and Caroline Braun Illgen. He came to America in 1890 aboard the SS Spree, arriving at the port of New York before making his way to Texas. The ship manifest lists his occupation as butcher.

In 1891, he married Emilie Braun in McDade, Texas. They had 6 children: Frieda, Oscar, Martha, Alice, Hattie, and Oswald. Oscar was a farmer and carpenter who built the rock house in Angleton, Texas, where he and his family lived for many years.
