Catherine Mary (Henry) Box, 94, passed away on April 1, 2023. Catherine was born in Walkerton, Indiana, the daughter of John Everett Henry and Irene (Martin) Henry. When she was six years old, her parents and brother George moved into a house in Walkerton next to her paternal grandparents, and she was able to share many special times with them. Catherine lived in that house through high school, after which she commuted to South Bend to take a secretarial course at the College of Commerce. After graduation she worked at the Indiana Bell Telephone company.

In 1949, Catherine married Thomas Box. They settled in South Bend and had four children. Catherine did not work outside the home for the next nineteen years, but she was an active school volunteer and participated in neighborhood activities. The family enjoyed summer camping trips in several states, including the trip of a lifetime out West to visit Mt. Rushmore, Yellowstone, and the Grand Tetons. They especially enjoyed visits to Wrigley Field to cheer for their beloved Chicago Cubs.

Catherine re-entered the work force in 1970, taking a part time job at the University of Notre Dame. In 1972, she was asked by a professor to work full time as his secretary in the History Department. She continued in that position through numerous changes of department heads until she retired in 1990. In 1991, Catherine was honored with a Special Presidential Award "For her twenty years of dedicated service to Our Lady's University." In the words of one graduate student, "The grapevine has it that Mrs. Box covertly runs the history department"; she "is the human face of the...department."

In retirement, Catherine volunteered at Portage Manor, where she directed the Bingo game and shopped at garage sales for Bingo prizes. To further her appreciation of the performing arts, she served as usher at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center at Notre Dame and enjoyed seeing many performances there. Catherine and Tom were active volunteers at Leighton Center for Senior Health. They were also avid milk glass collectors and volunteered for many years with the National Milk Glass Collectors Society. Catherine loved to sew and over the years, she skillfully created amazing Halloween costumes for her children and her grandchildren.

While enjoying extraordinary fitness and good health in her golden years, Catherine traveled extensively, checking off places on her bucket list, including the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, the Panama Canal, Galapagos, Northeast cruise into Canada, and two Alaskan cruises. She visited every state in the U.S. except Hawaii.

Catherine was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. While her father was still living, she attended Sumption Prairie UMC with him each Sunday. Later, she transferred to Clay UMC, faithfully attending and building close friendships at the church until she moved away from South Bend.

Tom passed away in 2019, and in 2021 Catherine relocated to Wilsonville, Oregon to be near her son and daughter. She lived in an independent care facility where she quickly made new friends and participated in several activities there. She enjoyed visits and outings with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved waterfalls and was excited to celebrate her 94th birthday at beautiful Multnomah Falls.

Catherine is survived by her children: Beverly Deguc of Beaverton, OR; William (Kathy) Box of Colorado Springs, CO; Becky Gafford of Collierville, TN; and Robert (Sandi) Box of Wilsonville, OR; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Prior to her death, Catherine was one of three surviving classmates among the 33 members of the Walkerton High School class of 1946, the other two being Iris June Dipert Holt and Deloyce W. Cripe.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Catherine can be made to Clay United Methodist Church online at https://pushpay.com/g/claychurch or to The Center for Hospice online at https://foundationforhospice.org/donate.
