For fifteen seasons (1968 to 1983), he played in the defenseman position in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings, New York Islanders, Quebec Nordiques, and St. Louis Blues. Born Gerald William Hart, he began his hockey career with his local amateur team, the Flin Flon Bombers, before his promotion to the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings during the 1968-1969 season. Hart had the distinction of being a member of the New York Islanders during their inaugural season (1972-1973). In 730 career regular-season games, he compiled 29 goals with 150 assists. After retiring from hockey, he served as executive vice president at Aramark.
