Betty Ann Barnard
September 3, 1936 - March 22, 2023
Lakewood, Washington - Betty Barnard, age 86, passed away on March 22, 2023. She was born on September 3, 1936 to parents Otto and Gladys Shealy in Atlanta Georgia. Betty was a loving wife and mother, and a good friend to many. She served in the United States Air Force and then worked as a civil servant for more than 30 years. When Betty and her family finally settled in Washington State in the early 70's, she began working at McChord Air Force Base and transitioned to Fort Lewis as an Administrative Assistant in support of Child and Youth Services in the Installation and Management Command where she ultimately retired in 2013.
Betty was a green belt in the Shorin-Ryu Seibukan, Okinawan style karate, where at age 69 she took 4th place in Women's Novice Division during the Washington National Championships. For her accomplishment she was honored with the Presidential Fitness award. She enjoyed walks in the park with her husband and beloved dogs, watching WWE wrestling, shopping, and visits from her children and grandchildren. Above all, Betty loved spending time with her husband Barney whom she affectionately called "What's His Name" and her sweet Chihuahua Annie. She will be dearly missed by many.
Betty is survived by her loving husband, Barney, children, Rick (Yon), Kathy Reiten, Candy Barnard-Davidson (Mark), and Dan (Kim), 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and special friends Annie, David and Goddaughter Teagan Cox.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, son Jeffrey David Barnard and great granddaughter Brylee Cyde Reiten.
Cremation services were performed by Curnow Funeral Home of Sumner, and the funeral service with military honors took place on June 30th at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Washington.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Hospice and especially to Grace and Sophia at Avian Adult Family Home for their kindness and loving care they showed our mother Betty.
