Professional Football Player. For twelve seasons (1965 to 1976), he played at the center position in the National Football League with the Detroit Lions and San Diego Chargers. Born Edward Joseph Flanagan, he was raised in Pennsylvania, where he attended Altoona Area High School. He played collegiate football at Purdue before he was selected by the Detroit Lions during the 5th round of the 1965 NFL Draft. During the course of his career, in which he totaled 165 career regular season games, he distinguished himself when he achieved Pro-Bowl honors four times (1969 to 1971 and 1973). After retiring as a player, he served as an assistant coach with the Oakland Invaders of the United States Football League (1984 to 1985). He was named to the Detroit Lions 75th Anniversary Team.
