When Belmond Township was formed from Pleasant Township in 1860, Elias was elected a trustee of the new township. Jane Oliver, daughter of Deborah Martin and Thomas Oliver, taught a subscription school in a granary on the Hill. They moved to Missouri where Jane died in 1889. Census records show a daughter named Ida who was born in 1861. A note in the Dumond Bible states they had a daughter named Stella, who was born in 1873. Elias died at the home of his sister, Harriet Dumond Barr, on March 15, 1897, and is buried in the Morman Cemetery near Macedonia, Pottawattamie County, Iowa.
