Actor. U. S. Navy, World War II. Awarded the Navy Cross for his action as Executive Officer aboard a minesweeper. His vessel struck a mine off the French Coast in August, 1944-the ship's captain was killed and Howard assumed command. He saved several overboard injured sailors by jumping into the sea. Also awarded the French Croix de Guerre. Started acting on the college stage while attending Western Reserve University (now Case Western Reserve University) in Cleveland, Ohio. Graduated Phi Beta Kappa. Most noted for his role as George Conway in Frank Capra's 1937 Lost Horizon. Appeared in many other films but transitioned to appearences in TV series, such as Perry Mason. Starting in the 1970's, Howard taught English at Highland Hall Waldord School for over twenty years.

Cause of death: Heart Failure.
