Melissa Buell's family moved frequently, leaving Indiana for Louisa Co. Iowa in April 1837, on to Mahaska County in 1844. They left for Oregon in 1846, but only got as far as Missouri, which they left May 14, 1847. Elias led a small wagon train to Oregon, arriving at Ft. Vancouver November 15, 1847. He established one claim in Polk County, then left for California, returning with $2000 in gold which he used to build a sawmill and a grist mill on a new claim on Mill Creek. Melissa married 1845 pioneer Isaac Hinshaw on January 1, 1850. Thirteen children have been identified. After Isaac's death in 1873, she married Isaac Van Horn.
