Pianist, Composer. The son of pianist Rodolphe Mathieu, he composed his first piece in 1933 at the age of four and made his performing debut in 1935. Performing on CBC Radio a year later, the government of Quebec paid for him to go to France where he would study until 1939. After returning from France, he continued to compose and perform his music even though his popularity slowly began to fall. Among the numerous works he composed during his short life are "Trois Études," "Concertino No. 1," "Concertino No. 2," and "Quebec Concerto." Eight years after his death, some of Mathieu's music would be used as the official welcoming and theme music for the 1976 Olympic games in Montreal.
