Ralph's regiment the 164th Infantry engaged in jungle warfare in the Pacific during World War II. The 164th was part of the AmeriCal Division so named for its formation on New Calidonia, the only Division not numbered. Often fighting along side of Marine forces, the regiment was nicknamed the "164th Marines". Beginning in Jan 1945, the AmeriCal Division was cleaning out Japanese resistance forces on the Philippines. Ralph's unit and date of passing indicates he was killed in action during these operations.
