Syrian Noblewoman. The mother of Roman Emperor Elagabalus. She was born in Emesa (now Homs, Syria) into a powerful family of high priests of the local deity El-Gebal, and was herself a priestess of the deity Atargatis. Julia Soaemias was known for her beauty and intelligence, and was appointed by her cousin, the Roman emperor Caracalla, as the high priestess of the Temple of Venus in Rome. She accompanied her son to Rome when he became emperor in 218 AD, and is said to have played a significant role in his reign. However, her influence was resented by the Roman Senate and the Praetorian Guard, who eventually staged a coup and assassinated both Elagabalus and Julia Soaemias in 222 AD.
