Thomas is the son of Joseph and Mehetabel "Hettie" Keller. He was born and reared in Davie County, NC and has three brothers, Alexander, William Marshal and John Adams Keller. His sisters are Sarah, Julia Ann Keller Murphy and Mary Jane Keller.

Thomas was admitted to the asylum in 1883, the year it opened. His marker indicates that he was the 160th person admitted. He remained hospitalized here for over 41 years and passed away of lobar pneumonia and dementia praecox (schizophrenia).

It is possible he came here from the asylum in Raleigh. He is not found in the 1880 census at home.
