Niram and his Albritton brothers-in-law were accustomed to grazing and watering their cattle on the Polk County prairie and the phosphate companies, owned by American Agricultural Chemical Company, wanted to fence off blocks of land intended for mining. As fast as the barbed-wire barriers were put up, the Albritton's and others would snip it under the cover of darkness.

As told by Ray Albritton, grandson of T.W., it all came to a head on a January night when a party of four, led by T.W."Tinker Tom", was caught in an ambush by sheriff's deputies. He was shot and killed along with his brother A.J. (Shann) and brother-in-law Niram Van Alderman. Jasper Albritton, their nephew, took cover in a palmetto patch and crawled to safety. He was eventually tracked by dogs to a neighbor's barn, captured and arrested.

It took a jury only fifteen or twenty minutes to find Jasper guilty in the infamous "Chicora Fence-Cutting Incident" - named for the tiny community near where it all went down.
