He was born April 5, 1939, in Dumas, Ark., a son of Heicht Brannon Smith and Carolyn Rose Dale. He married Betty Bishop on Dec. 23, 1959, in Farmer City.
He is survived by his wife; his father, Heicht Brannon Smith, Dumas, Ark.; four children, Shelley (Tim) Schultz, Benson, N.C.; Steve (Elaine) Smith, Bloomington; Susan (Matt) Geske, Bloomington; and Sandra Smith-Russell, Bloomington; his grandchildren, Robert and Sarah Schultz, Benson, N.C.; and Amanda Hess and Grace Smith; Stephanie, Madison and Skylar Geske; Kyndell Smith, Lashawn, Korynne, and Samiyah Russell, all of Bloomington; and a brother, Ernest (Linda) Smith, Dumas, Ark.
He was preceded in death by his mother and a granddaughter, Gabrielle Russell.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Bloomington.
Dale was an avid bowler and golfer. He loved all sports, but especially any sport his grandchildren were playing and he never missed a game.
