Alexander, a blacksmith by trade, was the son of Benjamin Crigger and Jane C. H. Pennington. He married Nancy Repass in Wythe County on 8 April 1852. They had at least two children, James Alfred and David A. (who apparently, as did other family members, adopted the surname "Cregger".)

During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Neff's Infantry Company of Local Defense.
