Lorraine was born August 7, 1923 in Battle Creek, IA, the daughter of Frank and Anna (Holtz) Janssen. She married Walter Helms on December 3, 1941 in Sterling. He preceded her in death on July 10, 1987. She was a life-long member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sterling and an active member of the Ladies of the Elks, Moose, and Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion.
Survivors include three daughters, Patricia (Ron) Engvoldsen of Augusta, GA, Kathy (Bob) Marsh of Sterling, and Lori (Paul) Chapman of Ft. Mill, SC; one sister, Dorothy Van Drew of Clinton, IA; eight grandchildren, Guy Terry, Tara Gosneigh, Trent Marsh, Erik Marsh, Grant Chapman, Davis Chapman, Michael Chapman, and Christopher Thomas; seven great-grandchildren, Conner, Caroline, Samuel, Kortny, Evan, Anna, and Madeline who always put a special twinkle in her eye, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Jeanine Thomas; two sisters, Mildred Scherner and Gladys Ericksen; and one brother, Louis Janssen.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Monday, February 19, 2007 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Reverend Judi Huseth officiating. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Visitation will be Sunday afternoon from 1-3 PM at Schilling Funeral Home.
