Jessie M. Abbott, 94, Aitkin, died March 8, 2008, at the Aitkin Health Services in Aitkin.

She was born May 31, 1913, at Aitkin, the daughter of Marion Clifford and Alma M. (Duchane) Oppelt. She grew up and attended schools in Aitkin graduating from the Aitkin High School in 1932. She then worked as a cook and waitress at various restaurants and cafes in the area and also in Grand Rapids and Bemidji. She operated her own café in Garrison in 1938 and 1939. She married Allen Hill on April 11, 1940, at Yuma, Ariz. They lived at 29 Palms, Calif., for a time and then moved back to Aitkin in 1941. They then lived in various places in the United States before permanently settling in Aitkin in 1946. She worked as a cook at the Blafus' Rest Home from 1948 to 1951 and cooked at the Rippleside School from 1958 to 1961. Her husband Allen died in 1966. She then went to work at the Aitkin Community Hospital as a cook in 1967. She had also worked as a cook at the Crosby Hospital and Andy's Cafe in the mid 1970s. She married Roy Abbott in 1971 and he preceded her in death in 1974. Jessie also did catering and had served as hostess at the 40 Club in Aitkin in the late 1970s.

She was a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary, a 40-year member of the Legion Auxiliary, member of the Elks Club, the Rebbekah Lodge, the Aitkin Community Hospital Auxiliary, the All Class Reunion Committee, and was a member of the Aitkin United Methodist Church. Jessie loved fishing.

A memorial service will be held Fri., March 14, at 11 a.m. from the Aitkin United Methodist Church in Aitkin with the Revs. Judith Clark and Larry Foote officiating. Burial will be in the spring at the Lakeview Cemetery in Aitkin. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Kay and Jim McKersie, Apache Junction, Ariz.; Mike and Elaine Hill, Aitkin; Lynn Futhey, Aitkin; seven grandchildren; a number of great- grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; brother, Frank Oppelt, Ironton; sisters: Mabel Caddy, Crosby; Ruth Lehrke, Ironton; and Lorna McDonald, North Oaks; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband Allen, in 1966; second husband Roy, in 1974; sisters; Arsalie, Audrey and Sara; and brothers, Bud and Glen.

Arrangements are with the Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin.
