Norman Thomas Foy was born in Monticello, Utah, on March 22, 1930, to Claude Harold Foy and Vera Kathryn Palmer. He was the youngest of four children and the last surviving child: Claude Jr. (1923-1926), Joseph (Doris Black) and Gloria (James Wrathall).
Norman grew up in Monticello during the Great Depression and WWII. With most young men, including his brother, serving overseas, Monticello schools lacked teachers and Norman attended Wasatch Academy in Mt. Pleasant, Utah, during the war years. He spent teenage summers helping to run cattle and haying, in addition to building uphill roads for the US Forest Service.
Upon his graduation from Monticello High School in 1948, Norman attended the University of Utah for two years. From 1950 to 1953 he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Argentina. He would tell his children how beautiful it was to go over the mountains to Uruguay to renew his visa every six months.
Upon his return to the United States, Norm volunteered to serve in the US Army, Counter Intelligence Corps. He was stationed in Baltimore, Maryland, learned Portuguese and served in Washington D.C. In November 1953, he met the special woman of his life at a dance, Helen Marie Crane.
On April 8, 1954, Norman and Helen were married in Alexandria, Virginia. After Helen graduated from nursing college in Baltimore in 1955, they moved to Salt Lake City, where Norman finished his studies at the University of Utah in 1957.
Norman's first post-graduate position was with Boeing in Seattle. He spent most of his career in the heavy machinery industry, retiring in 1995 from Courtesy Chevrolet's Fleet Sales in Phoenix. Norman was naturally curios, he had a love for the written word and was talented with his hands, both technically and musically.
Norman and Helen moved upon their retirement to a North Carolina farm. In 2003, they moved to Surprise, Arizona, where Norman spent his time devoted to caring for Helen. Following her death in 2013, he spent time traveling. One of his greatest travel highlights was his trip to Paris with Todd.
Norman and Helen leave behind their three children, Tommi Foy Jones (Steven Jones), Claudia Foy and Todd Foy (Holger Nordmann); their four grandchildren, Jessica Jones (Sean Trundle), TJ Jones (Lauren), Cassie Jones (Vaughn Pierce) and Emili Jones; and their great grandchildren, Milo and Maggie Jones.
