Carol Justine Lile Mitchell, 84, died Saturday, April 22, 2023, at her home in Alexandria, La.

Born on February 19, 1939, in Memphis, Tennessee, Carol lived there until she moved to Alexandria, Louisiana, 1967. Carol had the greatest admiration for and a vast knowledge of all thing's flora and fauna. The past 33 years were spent at her beloved "Green Heron" cultivating her interest in both. No creature went unnoticed nor seed left unplanted. For those who had the pleasure of an invitation, what a hidden treasure it was.

Because Carol never did anything second rate, it is hard to say exactly what she loved in what order because everything she did, she did with all of her heart including bringing in stringers of fish from the lake; joining the Ace Bridge Club of Alexandria and going for those gold points; being an active member of the Magnolia Dance Club; competing on the American Country Dance Associating Circuit; competing against fellow Krewe members in various competitions throughout the year in S'iriser and Camelot or hosting events in the "Bullfrog" and being the DJ. Carol was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Alexandria, LA.

The same could be said when it came to her career. After working various jobs, usually two at a time to help support her large family, she found passion in teaching. She worked at John Eskew Training School for many years as an aide working with handicapped infants and toddlers. She decided at the age of 40 to go back to school and get her teaching degree. That she did, at 44, graduating second in her class with a 3.97 GPA earning a B.A. Degree in Education from Louisiana College with a teaching Certificate in Elementary Grades, Kindergarten, Mentally Retarded and Noncategorical Preschool Handicapped. After graduation, Carol taught at J.B. Lafargue, Alexandria Jr. High and eventually settled in at Aiken Optional for the rest of her teaching career. She wasn't quite through yet when she decided to go to work as a carpenter's helper for Jeff Burns Builders after they had completed her and Claude's home at Green Heron.
Carol was very adventurous. She rode camels in Israel, horses in Mexico, and swam in the Dead Sea.

And then there is her family whom she loved so deeply. Preceding her in death are her parents, J.D. and Lorine Lile, son, Claude A. Mitchell, Jr. and daughter, Bonnie Mitchell Jones.

She is survived by her one love, 4 months shy of 67 years married, plus two dating says husband, Claude A. Mitchell, Sr. of Alexandria; children, Diana Megison (David) of Bentley, Cheri Childress (Robert) of Deridder, Alice Rodriguez (Jack) of Prospect, Kerry Mitchell of Dallas, Michelle Devalcourt (Robert) of Abita Springs; daughter-in-law, Lisa Mitchell (Claude Jr.) of Knoxville, TN, Thomas Lee Jones (Bonnie) of Columbia, SC; ten grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren, including Mama Mia, her cat.

The Mitchell family would like to express their appreciation for the kindness and professionalism shown by the personnel at Brookdale and Passages Hospice. You all made this much easier transition for mom and us. We are forever grateful.

Carol was a very generous and giving person and donated to many organizations. In lieu of plants or flowers, charitable donations may be given to your favorite charity in her honor.
