Leman Johnson Noble Passes Following Illness
Leman Johnson Noble, retired electrical engineer of Fort Benton, passed away on Sunday, March 24th, after an extended illness. For the past nine months he has been a patient at the St. Clare hospital, following a stroke of paralysis.
Born May 19,1870 at Crystal Lake, Minnesota, of pioneer parents, his boyhood days were spent on the farm in Illinois and South Dakota. At the age of 19 he became a stationary engineer and began a lifetime association with mechanical and electrical problems of the electric power industry.
In 1892 he went to Kalispell, Mont., where he served as chief engineer for the Kalispell Water and Electric Co. July 1898, Mr. Noble went to Kalamazoo, Mich., where he became associated with the Kalamazoo Valley and Electric Co. Gradually the small isolated utilities of southern Michigan were merged and in 1914 he was general superintendent of Consumer's Power Co., which today is a major unit of Commonwealth & Southern. In 1914 he retired and homesteaded near Colony Bay, northwest of Loma, Mont.
The call of the electrical profession proved too strong to resist and in 1915 he became associated with the Fort Smith Light and Traction Co. Subsequently the company became a division of the Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co. and Mr. Noble became general superintendent of the Fort Smith division. In 1940, at the age of 70, he retired and took up residence in Fort Benton.
On June 12, 1895, Mr. Noble was married to Elizabeth Aker, of Grand Forks, N. D., who with their three sons survive him. Harold A. Noble, of San Diego, Calif., is general superintendent of the San Diego Gas and Electric Co.; Kenneth L. Noble, of Muskogee, Okla., is an engineer with the Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co.; and Gerald P. Noble is now a chicken rancher near Seattle, Wash.
Funeral services were held from the Fort Benton Funeral Home chapel on Tuesday afternoon. The remains were forwarded Tuesday evening to Grand Forks, N. D., for interment. The relatives have the sympathy of all in their bereavement.
