JUDITH MARIE WADSWORTH HELFANT February 15, 1948 - April 16, 2002 proud mother of Amy and Ryan Helfant, and wife of David Benaroya Helfant, passed away peacefully at the age of 54, at her home in Berkeley, CA, surrounded by her family and friends on April 16, 2002, after a painful and overwhelming 22 month long struggle with metastatic breast cancer. Judith Marie Wadsworth lived a remarkable life that include sailing with two others to Fiji and the Tua Moto Islands in the South Pacific, starting the first natural foods grocery in Hilo, Hawaii in 1969, serving as Director of Admissions of the College of the Church Universal and Triumphant in Los Angeles, and helping to establish, and then serve as Vice President of Bay Area Structural, Inc., a prominent Oakland-based engineering construction company. She exemplified and personified the embodiment of her core beliefs: a belief in God, a personal manifestation of the teachings of the ascended masters and the prophets of all religions, and the importance of respect and compassion for all humankind. The daughter of two veterans, whose father died fighting in the Korean War, Judith was a vigorous patriot who believed the United States - having founded on the joint principles of freedom of religion and true democracy - deserved to be the leader of the world's nations in the global effort to achieve greater justice for all people. Her sense of fairness helped make her a notable success in the business world. Born in Minneapolis, she attended Wayne State University and then earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Hawaii at Hilo with majors in psychology and mathematics. She will be missed but never forgotten. The family requests that in lieu of flowers or gifts, donations be made in her name to Breast Cancer Action, 55 New Montgomery Street, S.F., CA 94105 and to the Camp Okizu Foundation (a camp for children suffering from cancer) located at 16 Digital Drive, Novato, CA 94949. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 P.M., Saturday, April 20, 2002 at the Chapel of the Sunset View Mortuary, Colusa and Fairmount Avenues, El Cerrito, California. SUNSET VIEW MORTUARY (510) 525-5111.

Alameda Times-Star 4/19/02.
