Arthur Sloan Butler, Jr.
GREENVILLE - Mr. Arthur Sloan Butler, Jr., 83, passed away on Friday, November 23, 2018 at Vidant Medical Center.
The funeral service will be conducted on Sunday at 5:30 PM in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Jones officiating. Following his wishes to be cremated, a private burial service will be held at a later date.
A native of Nash County, Mr. Butler was born to the late Arthur and Mary Marks Butler, and was a graduate of Benvenue High School. In 1958, he began his 35-year career with North Carolina State Highway Patrol in Duplin County. He earned numerous promotions in his career and eventually retired as Commander of Troop A in Greenville in 1993 at the rank of Captain. He was a longtime member of Crown Point Lodge #708 and also was a Shriner.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Butler was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Cumy Sasser Butler, in 2015 and a sister, Evelyn Arnold.
He is survived by: sons, Joseph Sloan Butler and wife, Dee, of Suffolk, VA and Robert Michael Butler and wife, Joy, of Beaufort; daughter, Rhonda Butler Wilkerson and husband, George, of Greenville; grandchildren, Brandon Butler, Stephen Butler and wife, Tiffany, all of Suffolk, VA, Chris Butler and Barrett Butler, both of Whitakers, Caroline W. Bradshaw and husband, Justin, and CeCe Wilkerson, all of Greenville; 7 great-grandchildren; sisters, Peggy Mills of Franklin, Nadine Joyner and husband, Gold, and Betty Sue Turner, all of Rocky Mount; and special extended family and a host of friends.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.
