Henry was born in Springfield, Mass. He followed his brother Abel Jr. to Lebanon, CT about 1700-03, married and lived there a few years, then returned to Springfield in 1707, and so was there for the Indian raid of July 26, 1708. His mother was scalped and died later of her injuries. His first wife, Hannah (Bliss) was captured in the Indian raid and died soon afterwards; their son, Henry Jr (6 mos. old) was killed.
