Graveside service: 11 a.m. Saturday in Watson Cemetery, 1024 N. Watson Road (SH 360), Arlington, where his parents, grandparents and great- grandparents are buried. Visitation: The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wade Family Funeral Home, 4140 W. Pioneer Parkway, Arlington.
Les was born April 11, 1924, in Glasscock County and was the oldest son of Lilly Williams and Lesley Edward Harper. He grew up in Roaring Springs. He was in the Civilian Conservation Corps and later served in the United States Navy from 1942-1948 aboard the USS Cowpens during World War II and on the USS Tarawa after the war. He married Patty Bailey on News Year's Eve 1948 in Carlsbad, N.M. He came to this area in 1955 and was an Arlington resident for over 35 years. He was the owner of University Barbers near the UTA campus during the 1970s and 1980s. He was a great-grandson of early Arlington pioneer Andrew Harper, who came to east Arlington in 1884.
He was preceded in death by his wife; brother, Ray Harper; and sister, Virginia Durfee.
Survivors: Sons, Leslie Harper of Hillsboro, Ore., Mike Harper and wife, Gaye, of Arlington and David Harper and wife, Vicky, of Lake Dallas; daughter-in-law, Yvonne Pedersen of Albany, Ore.; sister, Laverne Byers and husband, Jim, of Kingsland; brothers, Frank and R.T. Harper of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Kelly, Jason, Chris, Dara, Jackson, Austin and Kyle Harper; and several nieces and nephews.
