Katty was born November 28, 1931, in San Diego, the fourth of five daughters of Francis Patrick and Rosemary Byrne Dunne. The Dunnes traveled the country, following the thoroughbred racing season where Francis was a handicapper, then NY Racing Association Steward. The relocations helped the girls hone formidable social skills and forged a close bond among the sisters. They settled in Great Neck, NY, attended Great Neck High School and later, Manhattanville College. Kathleen graduated from Manhattanville in 1953 with a B.A. in English literature and went to work for Steuben Glass in New York City. She married Peter Van Bloem July 18, 1959. They chose Sea Cliff, NY to raise their growing family in the Saint Boniface Martyr parish.
Katty was a lector, Eucharistic Minister, and an active member of the Parish Council. At the St. Boniface grade school, she was an annual Class Mother, a stalwart member of the Mothers' Club, and served as a regular participant on the School Board. Her fifty plus years of service at St. Boniface led to many lifelong friendships.
Katty returned to the workforce after Peter's death in 1977 and balanced raising her five children with her career as an executive secretary Steuben Glass in NYC until her retirement in 1995. She then applied her expertise to helping Sea Cliff residents access federal grants, loans, and funds through the Sea Cliff Village Office.
An avid gardener, Katty became a Master Gardener and worked tirelessly for the Good of the Village in Sea Cliff, the Sea Cliff Centennial Garden, and Planting Fields Arboretum in Old Westbury,
She is predeceased by her husband, Peter, son Paul, parents Francis and Rosemary, and sisters Patricia Walker, Sheila Feitelberg, and Rosemary Hardart Dobbin, and sister in-law Catherine Cushing.
The family welcomes all for a viewing from 4pm to 7pm on Thursday, April 20 at the Scanlan Funeral Home, 781 Pompton Turnpike, Pompton Plains, NJ 07444. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am, on Friday, April 21 at the Cedar Crest Interfaith Chapel, 1 Cedar Crest Drive, Pompton Plains, NJ 07444. Interment will follow on Saturday at Holy Rood Cemetery, Westbury, NY.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff of Cedar Crest for their loving care and attention given Kathleen over the past 8 years.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Katty's memory to the Alzheimer's Association or the Cedar Crest Resident Care Fund.
