He came to America with his parents at age 4, settling in Madison Co., IL.
In 1861 he enlisted in the Union Army at Jefferson Barracks, MO, Co. D, 1st MO Cavalry Reg. His rank was private, specific job was blacksmith. His unit saw action in the battles of Bayou Fourche, Jenkins Ferry, & Prairie D'Ann.
He married Emma Hotz, June 20, 1865, in Highland, IL
They were the parents of 10 children : 2 dying in infancy, Anne & Gustave, & a daughter, Lizzie Schaefer, pereceding them in death in 1904. The seven surviving were Lena Hoffman, Amelia Holdman, George, John, Charles, Andrew Christian, & Edward.
