Funeral services were March 27 at the Apostolic Christian Church in Winthrop for Celina Schmidt, 93 of Winthrop. She died March 24, 1996, at the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center.
Celina Schmidt was born Sept. 20, 1902, in Baradaro, Argentina, South America, the daughter of Jacob and Anna (Loder) Wirtz. She moved to the United States May 29, 1910, with her family to Ottosen, Iowa.
On Jan. 26, 1921, Celina was united in marriage to Henry Schmidt in West Bend, Iowa, where the couple lived until 1936 when they moved to Minnesota. They lived in various locations, including Hutchinson and Brownton. Celina later moved from Brownton to Winthrop to Sibley Estate Apartments before entering the Winthrop Good Samaritan Care Center in September of 1991. She was an active member of the Apostolic Christian Church in Winthrop.
Schmidt was a hard worker who loved quilting, singing, gardening, and growing flowers.
She is survived by her children and their spouses: Arnold and Ruby Schmidt of Gaylord; Eldwin and Lois Schmidt of Winthrop; Lyle and Miriam Schmidt, Marjorie and Dwane Bucklin, Gladys and Burgess Gruendemann, all of Hutchinson; Arline Lindstrand of Willmar; Mary Thiem and Viola and Donald Messner, all of Peoria, Ill; Mildred Simonton of Crosby; Bernadine and Raymond Messner of Brownton; Dorothy and Ivan Alsleben of Silver Lake; and Joyce and Michael Abbell of Bethesda, Md.; 44 grandchildren; 69 great-grandchildren; four brothers and sisters-in-law; one sister and brother-in-law.
Schmidt was preceded in death by her husband, Henry, on June 23, 1974; sisters Lena Montag, Anita Meyers and two infants; and brother Alfred Wirtz.
Interment was at the Winthrop Cemetery.
