Jacob Chipman, fifth son of Samuel Chipman was born in Barnstable, Mass., Aug. 30, 1695; died 1741.
About all that is known of the life of Jacob Chipman is gleaned from his will which is dated at Halifax, Mass., Sept. 17, 1740. From this it is learned that he was about to join an expedition, against the Spaniards in the West Indies, which sailed from Massachusetts in October 1740. This expedition, under Commodore Vernon consisted of a large English fleet with 15000 sailors and 12000 land forces. The colonies contributed 3,600 and of these Massachusetts furnished five companies out of which only fifty men returned. It was a disastrous expedition; the yellow fever broke out among the sailors and soldiers and hundreds died daily. Jacob Chipman's will was probated at Plymouth, Mass., Nov. 2, 1741, which shows that he lost his life in the Spanish expedition. The will mentions his wife Bethiah, two daughters by his first wife and one son and seven daughters by the second wife.
