Algird "AI" Aukscunas was born in Scranton and passed away peacefully on April 17, 2022, just weeks before his 89th birthday.
Al resided in the "Plot" section of Scranton throughout his life and was the son of the late Alex Aukscunas and Florence (Chelkis) Aukscunas. He attended Scranton Technical High School and the Johnson School of Technology.
He was married to Christene "Tena" Dornheim for 49 years prior to her death in 2002. They raised two sons, Algird Jr. and Jeffrey of Scranton, and a daughter, Barbara Matheson of Nazareth, PA.
Al proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1947-1950. He was a life member of Legion Post 327 Raymond Henry, VFW Post 6082 Shopa Davy, and DAV Chapter 1.
He was an independent building contractor for 40 years. He was a proud Lithuanian and a lifelong member of the Providence of God National Catholic Church where his grandfathers were founding members. He was a long-time member of the Tauras Club and past president. He was a 50-year member of the Keystone Consistory as a Scottish Rite 32nd degree Mason and the Irem Temple Shrine.
He was a Past Master in Union Lodge 291 F & AM. Al was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, trap shooting, and fishing. He loved classic country and Polish polka music. He was a skilled polka dancer, frequenting weekly dances at the VFW and traveling for polka weekends. His dancing partners in life were his wife, Tena, and later, his companion of many years, the late Alice "Dee" Cordell.
Al was also preceded in death by his sisters, Catherine Kudrich and Alyce Aukscunas, and his grandson, Lucas Matheson. Surviving are his three children; a sister, Mildred Williams; grandaughters Kami Aukscunas and Sarah Kate Bastinelli; great-grandsons Dillon Beadle and Coleman Bastinelli; and nephews and a niece.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 10, at the Frank T. Mazur Funeral Home, 601 Dundaff St, Dickson City.
