Cpl. Jose A. Paniagua-Morales of Bell Gardens, Calif., graduated from high school and joined the Army in September 2004 and arrived at Fort Lewis the following January after initial training at Fort Benning, Ga. He died in Balad, Iraq, of wounds suffered in Samarra, Iraq, when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device at age 22.
