Born in Devonport, Bob was one of identical twins who seemed destined for sporting success. Both he and brother Geoff joined the club at 18, having played local football with Plymouth United. After just three Football League games as a centre-half for Argyle, Bob was signed by top-flight Chelsea whilst Geoff failed to make the grade. He was on the books at Stamford Bridge for three years, between 1948 and 1951, but found first team opportunities next to impossible, and ended up making just a single league appearance for the club, a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford on 9th April 1949. Whether frustrated by the lack of action or homesick, he returned to the South West and signed for Torquay United in August 1951.
Despite the significant step down from First Division to Third, he surprisingly failed to establish himself at Plainmoor, playing just five times and scoring once before returning to non-league football with Yeovil Town.
