John Brown, son of William C. and Eliza Brown, was born in Dark County, Ohio, October 26, 1851. In early childhood, he with his parents and an older sister moved into Eastern Indiana, where they resided three years and while here in this Indiana home another brother, Geo. S. was born. Leaving Indiana about the fall of 1854 or the spring of 1855 he and his parents, with his little brother and sister again followed the western trend and moved into Iowa, settling in Montezerma, Powskick County, where his second brother, M. L. was born and his oldest sister died. About the year of 1858 they settled at Millesburg, Iowa, where they resided until 1879 when the family moved to Graham County, Kansas, and secured homesteads. In 1905 Mr. Brown with his wife and two youngest daughters moved to Hays where he has resided until his death January 14, 1918.

At Millesburg, Iowa, he was married to Mary C. Green, September 22, 1874. To this union were born one son and five daughters, Mrs. Maude Callison, Mrs. C. C. Clark and Mrs. Pearl E. Beecher of Graham County, Kansas, Mrs. Sarah Johnson of Everet, Wash., and the youngest daughter Lena, who still lives with her parents and teaches in Ellsworth, Kansas. The only son, Albert W., lives in Jerome, Kansas. Thus all the children survive with five brothers and two sisters. Of the brothers, M. L., W. W., and S. S., reside at Eaton, Colo., C.D. at North Iowa. One sister, Mrs. Sarah Smith Delta, Colo., and G. S., at Sioux City, resides at Eaton, Colo., the other Mrs. Jennie Hann at Loveland, Colo. According to the latest advices all the children and the three brothers from Eaton, Colo., will be present at the funeral which will be held at the M. E. Church of Hays, Saturday afternoon, January 19th, at 1:30 conducted by Rev. Hale and Wiest, assisted by the Masonic Fraternity.
