In 1846 Elisha Hammer and his wife Rachel and the following party left Tennessee in six covered wagons for Iowa. Seth and Mrs. Elizabeth, Henry and Mrs. Hannah, Zachariah, Ira, Betsy Ann, Mahlon, Jess and Mrs. Lucinda Aaron Thompson, John Henry, Ira and Mrs. Sarah, Mary Jane and four that were not married Elisha, Polly and grandson Mahlon - also Isaac. They spent the winter of 1846 and 1847 at Richland, Iowa. Elisha Hammer taught school that winter and in the spring of 1847 came to Jasper county. Settled at Amboy switch. He resided there until his death in 1847. He organized the Friends Church there. His death came at Pleasant Plain, where he was on a visit and was buried there. Elisha Hammer owned a flour mill in New Market, Tennessee which was operated by sons Seth and Jessie. When they arrived they would sell their cargo and boat returning home on a steamboat.
