"Claude Alvis Galloway, son of John and Alice Coulter Galloway, was born in Orange County, Indiana, Feb. 4, 1878. He passed on from this life Feb. 24, 1955 at the Richland Memorial Hosp, Olney, Illinois aged 77 years and 20 days. His parents came to Richland Co, IL with him to make their home when he was just a year old. Claude was the oldest in the family of six boys and two girls. He attended the local schools and Carbondale Teacher's College, after which he taught school for 9 years in Clay and Richland counties [IL].

He was married to Rena Murray, March 30, 1902. After having first lived near Sailor Springs [IL] they moved to their farm in Richland County [IL]. In 1920 they moved to Olney [IL] for one year, then to Noble which remained his home. To this union were born three children: Herman of Chicago [IL]; Mrs. Maude Hance of Noble, Ill; and Mrs. Mary Ellen Wood of Bakersfield, California. After a long illness through which her husband devotedly cared for her, Rena passed away on Jan. 11, 1951.

In 1909 he was converted and united with the Freedom Baptist Church in which he continued to serve faithfully and loyally. For the past thirty-seven years he served as deacon of his church. In his own words he has written "The old church at Freedom where we first met, and in the churchyard where Rena lies sleeping, is and always had been the mainspring of my life down through the years, and all the way God has been good to us."

He believed the mind and intellect to be a sacred and divine trust. He believed they should be employed to search for "whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue and if there be any praise, think of these things. His search for these things gave him a life of rich Christian experiences. He had a special interest in genealogy but above all he enjoyed most attending church and hearing the Word of the Lord preached in truth and greatness.

He leaves his three children, four grandchildren, namely: Lila and Jim Wood, Claudia Wood Madsen and Robert Galloway. Three brothers: Otis of Portland, Ore., Raymond of Raleigh, North Carolina; John of Lawrenceville, Ill,; a sister, Mrs. Effie Judy of Paoli, Ind., with a host of relatives and friends.

His physical presence will be missed in his family, his church and his neighborhood, but those qualities for which his life stood will continue to live and grow in the lives touched in his daily living.

Funeral services were conducted at the Freedom Church on Sunday, February 27, by his pastor, Bro. A. E. Krestzer assisted by Bro. Wiley Nettleton. Interment was in the cemetery by the church
