In civilian life he was a carpenter.

He apparently was in the 17th U.S. Infantry during the Civil War, though I find no military record for him. The 17th U.S. was organized on 3 May 1861. They were assigned to Syke's Division of the 5th Corp. They suffered heavy losses at the Battle of Fredericksburg, when they were pinned down near the stone wall.

Enlisted on 26 October 1872 in Albany, New York in the 7th U.S. Cavalry. He was a private in Thomas Weir's Company D at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Weir wished permission to go to Custer's aid, but it was denied, but went forth with his troopers anyway. However, they were soon driven back to Reno Hill by the indians, where they fought the remainder of the battle.
