Longtime Alaska resident Millicent Irene DeFreest, 73, died June 11 at the Palmer Pioneers' Home where she had resided since 1985. A memorial service was held at the Palmer Pioneers' Home. Graveside services were held at Palmer Pioneer Cemetery.

Mrs. DeFreest was born Dec. 20, 1920, in Waterbury, Vt., to Candace Belle McIver and Paul Davis Backus. On June 5, 1940, she married her sweetheart, Donald DeFreest, a naval aviator. She and her family traveled to many different states until 1963, when they moved to Palmer. Mrs. DeFreest worked as a cook at Valley Hospital, Salvation Army Home and Kings Lake Camp in Palmer. She enjoyed fishing and her family. She introduced many of her grandchildren to their first fishing experience. Her family said, "She stayed in the state that her husband wanted to live in and raised her family by herself. She was a good mother, grandmother and friend to family and those she knew." Her husband, Donald, died in 1964.

Mrs. DeFreest is survived by her children, Charles DeFreest of Wasilla, Lynda Brase of Palmer, James DeFreest of Palmer, Susan Byers of Houston and Sandra Love of Palmer; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Arrangements were handled by Kehl's Palmer Mortuary.
