Longtime Alaska resident Benjamin G. Barber, 85, died Sept. 10 at Friendship Home in Anchorage. A funeral was held at Valley Funeral Home in Wasilla with the Rev. Gene Straatmeyer of First Presbyterian Church of Wasilla and members of Moose Lodge 793 officiating. Interment followed at Wasilla Aurora Cemetery. Pallbearers were Wylie Betts, Wetzel Betts, Shane Barber, Jim Polis, Dennis Polis and Pete Polis. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Bellinger, Marvin Paulsen and Chris Dinnsen.
Mr. Barber was born April 5, 1909, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Gabriel and Iva Elizabeth Barber. He married Esther Stella Elliott on July 4, 1935. He came to Anchorage in 1941 and was a self-employed carpenter and commercial fisherman. In 1968, he moved to Wasilla where he built his home following retirement. Mr. Barber was a member of Moose Lodge 793 in Palmer, Pioneers of Alaska and a former member of the Elks Lodge. He enjoyed outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, camping and clam digging. Mr. Barber was preceded in death by his wife in 1989.
Surviving are his son, Jack of Anchorage; sister, Marie McDannel of Port Angeles, Wash.; grandchildren, Shane, Lisa and Benjamin Barber, and Jackie Marie Polis; and great-grandson, Tyler Polis.
