Died: Monday, March 10, 2008
Joseph H. Huber Jr., 74 Starlight, died Monday, March 10, 2008, after a brief struggle with leukemia.
Born March 20, 1933, in Starlight, he was the son of the late Joseph H. Huber Sr. and Mary C. Koetter Huber.
He was a fruit and vegetable grower and restauranteur who started the first you-pick farm in the Midwest in 1967 in Starlight and opened the Joe Huber Family Restaurant in 1983. He was president of the Indiana Vegetable Growers Association for 17 years and a former director of the National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Corp., Harrison REMC and National City Bank. He received an honorary degree in agriculture from Purdue University and was a life-long member of St. John the Baptist Church in Starlight.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Paul Huber.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, the former Bonnie C. Kruer; five children, Joseph H. Huber III, Kimberly A. Kaiser, Beverly Engleman, Lewis A. Huber and Charles A. Huber, all of Starlight; five sisters, Sister Rosemary Huber of California, Doris Wathen of Atlanta, Ga., Sister Kathryn Huber of Ferdinand, Cecilia D'Apice of Fairfield, Conn., and Carol Griswold of Indianapolis; three brothers, Norbert Huber of New Albany, John L. Huber of Louisville and David Huber Clarksville; 12 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
Visitation: Wednesday, March 12, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Thursday, March 13, from 1 to 8 p.m. at Kraft Funeral Service in New Albany.
Prayer service: Thursday, March 13, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
Funeral Mass: Friday, March 14, at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church follow by burial in the church cemetery.
The family suggests memorial gifts to the WHAS Crusade for Children, St. Elizabeth Home of Southern Indiana or the American Cancer Society.
