William Shane was the son of a Robert Shane of Ireland.

He married Louisa E. Lyons on 19 February 1831 in Gibson Co., Tennessee. They had at least seven children; Nancy, James, Sarah J., Martha E., John, Samuel and Mary Shane.

He married (2) Metilda A. Delph in 1859 Gibson Co., TN.
