She was born Feb. 13, 1926, in Plainview, Nebraska, a daughter of the late Charles Butterfield and Lois Tift Butterfield.
On Jan. 26, 1945, in St. Louis, Missouri, she was married to Ralph Francis Forinash, who preceded her in death on Nov. 4, 1994.
Surviving are her daughter, Doris Wiseman of West Union; four grandsons, J.D. Forinash, Stephen Forinash, Michael Wiseman and John Wiseman; three great-grandchildren, Jessica Forinash, David Forinash and Rachel Wiseman; and two sisters, Eva Campbell, Lebanon, Missouri, and Fern Frazier, Mountain Home, Arkansas.
She was preceded in death by her son, retired U.S. Army Major David Ralph Forinash; her daughter, Donna Forinash Somers; three sisters, Alice Rust, Arlene Eldreid and Leila Parks; and one brother, Lester Butterfield.
A resident of Huttonsville since 1962, Avis served 17 years as the recorder for the Town of Huttonsville and was the Huttonsville postmaster from 1981 until her retirement in 1988.
For decades she volunteered at Tyrand Cooperative Ministries in Mill Creek, an ecumenical organization serving the less-fortunate in the Randolph County area.
In 1982 she and her husband helped lay the block foundation for Tyrand's building housing its Thrift Store and offices and for years provided any repairs needed at the facility. Avis assisted with Tyrand's Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets, Christmas Toy Store, Back to School Store, fund-raising dinners, auctions, Summer Day Camp and was a volunteer several years at the Thrift Store.
In addition, she represented Tyrand at many Celebrations of Mission events throughout West Virginia. As one of Tyrand's "Crazy Ladies" crafters, Avis made sock monkeys and Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy dolls to sell as fund raisers, and at Tyrand Fall Fairs supervised demonstrations of applebutter making. Avis received Tyrand's Volunteer of the Year Award numerous times. In 2016 she was the recipient of the prestigious Doorway of Hope Award from the West Virginia United Methodist Conference for her volunteer work at Tyrand and for "showing the less fortunate there is always hope." A member of Tygart Valley Presbyterian Church in Huttonsville for 60 years, Avis served as a Sunday School teacher and choir member, and assisted with many events including the church's centennial celebration in 1983.
Friends will be received Thursday at Tygart Valley Presbyterian Church in Huttonsville from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Rich Cardot will officiate and interment will follow in the Brick Church Cemetery near Huttonsville.
