Obituary

"Nestling among the blue Alsatian mountains of Germany was the little hamlet of Upper Bethsdorf (Oberbetschdorf), in the county of Sultz. Here on the 26th day of April, in the year 1833, was born to Frederick Kochensparger, peasant, and his wife, Mary Eve Fincke, a son. These people were zealous Lutherans and according to the custom of the church, when he was but a few days old they carried him to the parish church where he entered into covenant relation with his God by the rite of holy baptism at the hands of Rev. Ningler.

"In 1834 they came to America and settled on government land in Monday Creek township, where St, John's Lutheran church now stands, and which has been the home of George Kochensparger the most of his life.

"On December 28, 1845, after being instructed in the doctrine of the church he was confirmed a full member of the same by Rev. Charles G. Reichert. To this church he remained faithful for 55 years.

"After learning his trade, that of shoemaker, he went to Pike County, Ohio, where he went into the mercantile business. On July 1, 1855, he was married to Miss Barbara Laufer, of Pike County. To this marriage were born five sons and six daughters, all of whom remain to mourn his death, with the exception of one son, who died in infancy. The subject of this sketch has been a successful farmer, stock raiser and business man, and has held many positions of trust and honor. He was once Coroner of Perry county and has held the office of township treasurer for many years. For several years he has not enjoyed the best of health and his system could not withstand the rigors of his last illness, lung fever, which was only of a week's duration.

"In the spring of the year, when all nature was taking on new life, when the beauties of field and forest were coming forth to gladden, in the darkened sick room, the soul of George Kochensparger slowly passed through the "valley of the shadow." At two o'clock on the morning of May 2nd, in the still hushes of the night, he solved the mystery of Death. His age was 67 years and 6 days. Besides his wife and ten children there remain to mourn his death sixteen grandchildren, one great grandchild, one brother and two sisters. His children are Mrs. George Nader, Junction City, John H. Kochensparger, Shawnee, Mrs. G. Amendt, Gore, J. M. Kochensparger, Oregon, Charles E. Kochensparger, Hemlock, Frank Kochensparger, Corning, Mrs. Warren Zuhars, Springville, Ky., Mrs. Clara Kochensparger, Columbus, and Misses Laura and Almeda, who are yet at home. His brother is John Kochensparger of Circleville, O., and his sisters are Mrs. Jacob Martzolff, of Mondaycreek township.

"George Kochensparger will be missed – missed in the community; missed in the councils of the church; missed in the family circle.

"Out of the shadows of night,
The world rolls into light,
It is daybreak, everywhere."

"His funeral was largely attended at St. John's Lutheran church, where Rev. W. E. Harsh preached a solacing sermon based on Revelations, 14-13."
