Alice Butler, 90, of Amarillo died Thursday, March 6, 2008.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Schooler Funeral Home Brentwood Chapel, 4100 S. Georgia St. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery.

Alice was born Jan. 20, 1918, in San Diego to C.C. "Charlie" Bridges and Clara E. Bridges. She attended Amarillo public schools and graduated from Amarillo High School in 1935, then went on to attend Amarillo College. She married Willard Butler and they moved to Las Vegas, N.M., where they operated a motel and Alice was a self-employed Realtor.

In 1977, Alice returned to Amarillo to care for her aging mother. Despite losing her vision, she continued in the real estate business in Amarillo until her retirement. Alice volunteered in many community organizations. She served on the Panhandle Action Center for Independent Living Skills (PACILS) board of directors, as well as that of High Plains Lighthouse for the Blind and was a member of Amarillo Council for the Blind. She also was appointed by the governor of Texas to serve on the Consumer Advisory Council for Texas Commission for the Blind.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Margie Hinson.

Survivors include a daughter, Betsy Thorne and husband John of Greensboro, N.C.; a son, Dr. Charles Brasfield of Vancouver, British Columbia; a grandson, John C. Thorne, who was the "joy of her life"; and many dear friends who were her extended family.

The family suggests memorials be to Industries of the Blind, 920 W. Lee St., Greensboro, NC 27403-2803; or a favorite charity.
