Balloonist Allen Emer, 59, died on June 24, 2006, after lightning struck while he slept in a hammock at Round Valley State Park in the Lebanon section of Clinton Township during a kayaking trip. The police stated that lightning struck a tree to which the hammock was attached and subsequently hit Emer. An autopsy will be conducted to confirm the exact cause of death. Emer, a Holmdel resident and daring balloonist, had famously stood atop his balloon waving a U.S. flag after the 9/11 attacks. His son, Sean, told NJ Advance Media that given his adventurous nature, it was a fitting way for his father to go. Deputy Chief Sam DeBella of the Hunterdon County prosecutor's office echoed this sentiment to The Courier News of Bridgewater.
