John Curtis Engel of Fredericksburg, Texas passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior on March 29, 2023 at the age of 88. He was born on October 30, 1934 to Benno and Elizabeth Klier Engel of Luckenbach, Texas.
He is survived by sisters Della Mae Pohler of San Antonio, Rose Patton of Mineral Wells, Jo Nell Lamothe (Richard) of Seabrook, sister-in-law Peggy Engel of Bastrop, brother Benno Engel (Jan) of New Braunfels, five nephews, two nieces, and several great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother James Engel, brother-in-law Milton Pohler, nephew Russell Patton and great niece Kelsey Pohler.
John attended Luckenbach Elementary and graduated from Fredericksburg High School. He received an Associates Degree from Texas Lutheran College and a B.B.A. from Southwest Texas State Teachers College. Upon graduation, he served in the U.S. Army with a tour of duty in Germany. For many years he was an elementary school teacher for several south Texas school districts. Later he worked for several grocery store chains in San Antonio and Fredericksburg.
John loved history, especially about Luckenbach and Germans in Texas. He spent many hours researching many topics including family genealogy. He made many friends from throughout the U.S. and Germany with his tales of Texas and the Engel family.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 4, 2023 from 1:00-2:00 pm at Bethany Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg with the funeral service at 2:00 pm. at Bethany Lutheran Church. Graveside services and Interment will follow at Der Stadt Friedhof.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be given in John's memory to Bethany Lutheran Church, The Golden Hub Meals on Wheels, or a charity of their choice.
