Michael L. Alford, 71, of Martinez, passed away on Friday, May 22, 2015. He was born July 6, 1943, in Martinez, the only son of Budd and Mary Alford.
Mike attended Saint Catherine of Siena School before joining the Class of 1963 at Alhambra High. In his early teens he was a member of the Boy Scouts, earning several badges and awards, and later in his teen years was a member of the Martinez Mod Rods car club. One of his favorite pastimes was playing pool, and for many years he could, on any given night, be found shooting pool till closing time down at the B&B on Ferry Street. Mike also loved to work out and keep in shape; he was a big fan of sports, particularly boxing, and he lifted weights and did aerobics every day. He also loved music and reminiscing to the soundtrack of his life.
Mike was always ahead of the times in looking for ways to improve the environment. He loved working on experiments, and most recently was involved in bringing E3 Services and Solutions Inc. (Energy, Environment, Economy) to Martinez. Mostly, he just loved helping others.
A candidate for City Council and mayor of Martinez, Mike attended almost 300 City Council meetings in a row before he passed. He wanted to see the best of Martinez preserved and ensure that the city, which he lovingly referred to as "Camelot," grow and improve in a positive direction. Except for a five-year period living in Concord, Mike resided in Martinez for 71 years. He so loved his hometown and so many of the people in it.
The other and greatest love of Mike's life was his family.
The nickname "Batman" came with the birth of Mike's grandson, Michael Davey. "Grandpa" just didn't fit, so Mike, ever the protector, became "Batman" with little Michael Davey his "Robin." The two of them were together, side by side, every day. To this day, all the kids at school call Mike Batman – a monicker that truly fits the man who always wore black and watched out for others.
Mike and his wife Roberta recently celebrated their 41st anniversary, having married in 1974. Along with Roberta, he leaves his mother, Mary Alford of Martinez; sister Kathy Holcomb of Pittsburg; daughters Tracey McKeown (Tom McKeown) of Martinez; Serena Seyler of Portland, Oregon; and Liea Bramlett of Fort Bragg, California; sons Michael Alford Jr. of Rohnert Park, California; Scott Alford of Martinez, and Michael Moore of Las Vegas, Nevada; and many and several great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father, Budd Alford of Martinez, and his daughter, Gina Alford of Portland, Oregon.
Mike was loyal to God, his country, his friends and his loved ones. He always stood up for what he thought was right, even when he faced criticism for doing so. He visited and cared for his aging mother daily, and called or visited his many friends nearly every day. He cared for so many – there's nary a life in Martinez Mike didn't have an effect upon. Mike, father, son, husband, friend, we'll miss you. We love you.
A memorial for Mike will be held Sunday, May 31, at 2 p.m. at the Martinez Yacht Club, 111 Tarantino Road, Martinez. All are invited and encouraged to attend to celebrate his remarkable life.
