ADAMS -- Anne Jeanne Gurvin, age 75, died suddenly on Tuesday March 4, 2008.

Anne was born in Rochester, Minn. to Palmer and Regina (Krebsbach) Gurvin and graduated from Adams High School, Adams, Minn. Following high school, she obtained a BA degree in English and American studies, with honors, and an MA degree in Library Science and Spanish Literature from the University of Minnesota. She attended the Sorbonne in Paris, France, the University of Madrid in Spain, and the University of Texas in Austin, Texas.

Her early career included teaching high school English in Olivia, Minn., serving as a library administrator for the U.S. Army Foreign Services in France, and working as an academic at the University of California at Berkeley. In 1968, Anne was appointed to the U.S. State Department where she served almost 30 years, mainly in Europe and South America, and rose to the rank of Senior Foreign Service Officer. She spoke French, Spanish, Swedish, and Dutch fluently. She was the recipient of many awards. Her management style is quoted in a book on creative leadership that was published in 1995. While she lived overseas for almost 21 years during her U.S. Government service, she continuously kept close ties with her family and friends throughout the U.S. Upon retirement, she resided in Washington, D.C.

Throughout her life, Anne was committed to the promotion of music, literature and theater in the U.S. and cultural exchange between the United States and countries overseas. She was active in politics and voter registration. She continued her involvement with academic institutions including serving as a judge for the Carnegie Foundation. She was an active member of the organization of Diplomatic and Consular Officers (Retired), of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Washington D.C., and many other organizations. She was a donor to many special causes. She loved to travel. She had planned an upcoming trip to Morocco in April. Anne's major life challenge came when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. For 15 years she fought six different cancers with the guidance of doctors and staff of the Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins. She contributed in the writing and development of several cancer therapy/recovery books, one published by the Harvard University Press.

She is survived by three brothers: Peter (Jerusha), Bethesda, Md., George Gurvin, Arlington, Va., John (Antoinette), Burnsville, Minn.; nieces: Amelia and Katherine Gurvin; nephew Kenneth Gurvin, and a number of cousins.
