Longtime Alaska resident Ernest R. Roe, 78, died June 24 at Providence Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial was at Holy Family Cathedral, with the Rev. Bede Wilkes of-ficiating. A graveside service and burial was at Hickerson Memorial Cemetery in Homer.

Mr. Roe was born May 25, 1914, in Cataldo, Idaho. He lived in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, until 1942, when he married Teckla Mattson. They moved to Alaska with the Army during World War II. They arrived in Seward by steamship in 1944. They lived in Anchorage for many years. Mr. Roe was in the transportation business, operating many local taxi companies as well as an intercity bus company linking the Kenai Peninsula, Anchorage and Tok. He later started the Anchorage bus company that was purchased by the city and the People Mover system. In 1977 the Roes retired to Homer, where they built a home. Mr. Roe was a member of the Homer Planning and Zoning Board. He was active in the Elks Lodge, Senior Citizens Center and Pioneers of Alaska Igloo No. 14. He enjoyed fishing and crabbing on his boat in Homer and, more recently, fishing from the deck of his daughter and son-in-law's Kenai River cabin. In January, Mr. and Mrs. Roe celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a reception at the Anchorage Pioneer Home where they resided.

Mr. Roe is survived by his wife, Teckla, and their three children and their spouses, Ernie Jr. and Penny Roe, Mary and Stowell Johnstone, and Valerie and Allan Maxim; his sister, Ann Lange of Seattle; three grandchildren, Travis Maxim and his wife, Kelly, and Traci Maxim and Matthew Perry; and his close friends, Gene and Nancy Chavis of Anchorage and Homer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Diabetes Association, 3101 Penland Parkway, Anchorage 99508. Arrangements were by Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
