Alicia Baumgartner was born October 7, 1927, in Detroit, Michigan, to Charles Raphael and Bella Mae (Werner) Flanagan. She graduated from Immaculata High School in Detroit and attended Michigan State University, majoring in Art. She was a talented artist and a fashion illustrator for Hudson's Department Store in Detroit. She married her husband, Ray Baumgartner, on November 27, 1948. In 1949 they moved to Contra Costa County in California. Alicia and Ray were members of Christ the King Church in Pleasant Hill, CA, and active volunteers for the Contra Costa County Food Bank. They both served terms as president for the Pleasant Hill Historical Society. Alicia was a volunteer teacher for the Contra Costa County Library adult literacy program and docent for the Alexander Lindsay Jr. Museum.
While Alicia's principal occupation was that of loving wife and mother, and devoted caretaker to her elderly parents, she persued her interest in art throughout her life, showing her work in charcoal, pastels, and watercolor at many venues in the East Bay. She was an expert seamstress and needlewoman and an innovative metalcrafter and jewelry maker. She collected owls, read voraciously, did the New York Times and San Francisco Chronicle crossword puzzles every day, and appreciated a good martini.
Alicia resided in Pleasant Hill until her husband died in 2003, after which she moved to Flagstaff, Arizona, to live closer to her only son and daughter-in-law.
Alicia was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and her sister, Mary Patricia Cox, and brother, Donald Joseph Flanagan. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Karl and Mrs. Zenaida Calvillo Baumgartner; granddaughter, Heather Colleen (Mrs. Matthew) Szundy; and many family members and friends throughout the United States.
